Acupuncture during cancer treatment?

What is acupuncture

It is an ancient practice originating from Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is based on activating energy blockages through the technique of inserting small, sterile needles into certain points on the skin called acupuncture points.

Currently in the West it is also beginning to be focused as a supportive treatment for cancer patients.

Multiple scientific studies confirm that it is a practice very safe and effective. Provided that it is carried out by qualified and experienced professionals.

Why does it work?

The body is full of energy channels and vital energy is transmitted through them (Chi).

We know that each organ in our body has a channel or meridian that corresponds to it, that is, it is connected to its nerve or nerve terminal. Distributed along the meridians we have hundreds of specific and superficial points that are in turn connected to organs, nerves, muscles and bones. These points are called acupuncture points.

Thanks to the impulse of the needles at its acupuncture point, the blocked energy is channeled and flows again throughout the body. With these stimuli on the trigger points we will obtain a result of relief, improvement and physical and emotional well-being.

Acupuncture to help oncological effects

As Dr. Marian Lorente Gascón comments, Acupuncture is a complementary technique to oncological treatments such as chemo or radiotherapy. Your approach to managing and treating palliative and supportive symptoms of cancer is very important.1

Hundreds of scientific studies in the last 20 years verify its safety and effectiveness. If done correctly, the risk is minimal and the benefit maximum, making it a good option to alleviate and improve our health. 2

Remember: acupuncture performed correctly never hurts, it only pierces the skin with a 20 mm tip. It is painless and gives beneficial results.

Side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy
  • Protects from the toxins of oncological treatments, avoiding subsequent infections. Regenerates intestinal and liver function
  • Increases white blood cells, strengthening the immune system.
  • Reduces high sensitivity to external factors such as cold, heat, excessive bleeding, fatigue, anemia and dyspnea (difficulty breathing)
  • It also reduces gastrointestinal discomfort, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, dry mouth, hot flashes, vertigo and dizziness.
  • Relieves chronic pain, peripheral neuropathies (derived from diabetic patients) and neuropathic pain; improving cervical, lumbar, thoracic and joint pain.
  • Tension and temporal headaches and trigeminal neuralgia decrease.
  • Sleep disorders, dizziness, anxiety and depression.

Cancer and acupuncture. Investigation. Studies

The American Cancer Society ACS has conducted hundreds of studies verifying that the acupuncture technique is highly recommended as support to manage the symptoms of the effects of oncological treatments (chemotherapy and radiotherapy).

It has been found that it has no risk and is therefore considered safe, as long as it is carried out by an expert in the technique, an experienced person with demonstrable knowledge to guarantee its result.
