Acné hormonal en personas adultas, qué es y cómo prevenirlo

Hormonal acne in adults, what it is and how to prevent it

It is common to associate acne with adolescence, however, its presence is also common in adults. In the last 20 years, the incidence has increased considerably, especially in women between 25 and 50 years old (1). Some cases persist from puberty, but others appear at older ages (2). Perhaps, we can attribute this increase to the current frenetic lifestyle, lack of time and ephemerality. Although, we must not forget the responsibilities, stress and hormonal changes that arise in adulthood and that affect (a lot!) the balance of the body. The skin reflects the state of our interior and the stability of the body is essential for a healthy appearance. Next, let's see what hormonal acne is and how to prevent it.

What is hormonal acne and why does it appear in adults?

It is a skin disorder presented in the form of blackheads, whiteheads, cysts and slow-healing pimples. Unlike youth acne, which is common in the T zone, hormonal acne usually appears on the lower part of the face, U zone. Chin, around the mouth, cheeks and neck.

It is caused by an excess of sebum (natural skin oil) that clogs the pores. It can be manifested by hormonal changes (menopause, menstrual period, pregnancy, hormonal diseases or increased testosterone hormones), diet and unbalanced lifestyle (stress, lack of sleep or basic nutrients), specific treatments and medications, inadequate skin hygiene (excess-deficit of hygiene or inappropriate cosmetics), predisposition genetics or extreme dryness.

How to improve and prevent hormonal acne?

  1. Boosts emotional well-being. Stress, anguish or anxiety cause and aggravate acne. Taking time to relax, take care of yourself and do what you like most is investing time in enhancing well-being and improving health.

  2. Eat a balanced diet. Avoid processed foods and favor fruits, vegetables, legumes, meats and fish that contribute to the well-being of the body. A poor diet unbalances the body and the skin weakens, presenting skin conditions such as acne. In recent years, the frenetic pace of life has led us to prioritize speed. We spend little time and prefer fast food (low in nutrients and high in sugars, refined flours and toxic preservatives).

  3. Take proper care of your skin with environmentally friendly natural products. Both under-cleansing and over-cleansing affect the skin's pH. The deficiency contributes to the clogging of pores, allowing pollution particles, traces of makeup, etc. keep obstructing. Otherwise, excessive cleansing dries out the skin. It alters the pH and weakens the lipid mantle against bacteria (such as acne bacteria Propionibacterium acnes). The sebaceous gland detects a lack of hydration and produces more sebum to balance it. Therefore, it is important to contribute to the maintenance of dermal pH with appropriate natural cosmetics: those that adapt to the pH and needs of the skin.

At GGcare, we work daily to offer products that respect skin pH (and, of course, cruelty free). Cosmetics that contribute to strengthening the skin and emotional well-being to achieve FULL HEALTH to the maximum. Because, for healthy skin, it is necessary to take complete care of it and take care of yourself. A healthy lifestyle is necessary.
